The arrangements are in place, the contract was signed, and the team just showed up. It's real—the remodel has begun!
But chances are you're like every homeowner out there thinking: "Okay… now what?"
Remodeling is a thrill, but then comes dust, noise, and disruption in your home for weeks (sometimes months). Here's a step-by-step account on what transpires after your project officially starts:
______________________________
Step 1: Demolition (Out with the Old)
Remodels often begin with demolition. That could mean pulling out lighting, flooring, or outdated cabinets. Worry not if it looks ugly before it looks beautiful—demo makes room for your new space.
Anticipate dust and noise (your contractor will barricade areas where they're working).
On occasion, there may be an unexpected surprise behind walls that is uncovered once demo has begun. When this happens, we always inform you (the homeowner) and make sure you're aware of our plan to resolve it.
Step 2: Framing and Rough Carpentry Work
Once all of the old material has been removed, then it becomes a rebuild job. This procedure will typically entail:
Constructing new partitions or walls (if applicable)
Electrical, HVAC, and plumbing rough-in (running the wire, pipe or vent before reinstalling the drywall)
Inspections (your contractor will arrange for city/county inspectors if necessary)
Step 3: Drywall, Flooring, and Trim
Now that the "bones" are intact, your house will begin to resemble a place where you can live again. This phase normally entails:
Hanging and completing drywall
Floor installation (tile, hardwood, or LVP)
Adding trim, doors, and/or moulding
You will actually start seeing your vision come to life here!
Step 4: Cabinets, Fixtures, and Finishes
Now we get down to business—the things that make a room yours. In your project this could be:
Countertops and cabinets
Light fixtures and plumbing installations
Paint, backsplash, and hardware
Now your renovation will start resembling the perfect space that you had in mind.
Step 5: Final Walkthrough and Punch List
Before your contractor declares it complete, you will do a final walk-through as a team. Then you can verify that everything looks and functions as designed.
You will create a punchlist of minor repairs (paint correction, hardware alignment, etc.).
When the punchlist repairs/touchups have been completed, we'll finish any remaining clean up and load out any remaining tools/materials/debris.

Living Through a Remodel: What to Expect
Remodels are exciting - but disruptive. Here's how you can make it less stressful for you and your family:
Set up temporary zones (such as a temporary kitchen when doing a kitchen renovation).
Pet and child planning—building areas are hazardous.
Communicate frequently with your contractor. Good ones will give you regular progress updates.

Bottom Line
When your renovation begins, demolition will get underway, followed by rebuilds, inspections, finishes, and then—the big reveal. It can be an intimidating process, but a good contractor will always let you know where you are in the process as well as where you're headed next.
